Susan Merrill Thomas, like her name suggests, is the classic boomer. She had two children, a boy and a girl, a husband, aging parents, a teaching job, a dog, a red brick and taupe suburban home, and a gray minivan. When it all turned upside down, she retired and set out to see the world in an unorthodox way.
Peanut Buttered Roast Squid A Boomer Travels Solo is a memoir and travel book that begins with a series of losses that set the author on an uncharted path from suburban Michigan to exotic locations around the world. While her story illustrates the redemptive power of change, it is primarily a primer and guidebook for solo travelers who want to explore affordable and exciting locations.
From her initial dive off the deep end with a month-long trip to Japan and Korea, to her determination to escape Michigan winters in Central America, Thomas learns from mistakes, does her pre-voyage research, and shares it all in an inspiring series of informal travel tales. After 30 years of teaching English, she struggles through a Prague-based training program for teaching English as a second language while observing the lasting effects of communist rule. In day trips and long-weekend travels through central Europe, she goes off the most touristic path and remembers the Cold War fears that were part of a mid-century American childhood. In Guatemala and Nicaragua she guides us through friendly ex-pat communities and the layers of Spanish and indigenous cultures. While she wonders at her limited knowledge of the countries’ political struggles recorded in murals, her place in the world gently shifts.
For the tourist who wants a local experience as reflected in a region’s food, street life, folk and fine art, history, and idiosyncrasies, Peanut Buttered Roast Squid provides a quirky and appreciative view of the world. This is not from the perspective of the back-packers who shared the road in Phnom Penh and Copan Ruinas, Bangkok and Krakow, but from an active, older traveler who needs a clean, safe bed and a good meal, preferably with wine or beer.

Peanut Buttered Roast Squid A Boomer Travels Solo eBook Susan Thomas Alison Connors Reviews
Susan describes her adventures beautifully. She finds the beauty, cultural interest, accidental friendships, food and experiences of each place she visits by her openness and willingness to take "the road less travelled". Her story is well told and read along with her blog, I learned about places, accommodations as well as the "how to" of solo travel.
What a most delightful journey I took with Susan Thomas through her adventures. The author eloquently describes her encounters with people, architecture, foods, towns, sites, inner feelings and thoughts so well, that I could actually experience them with her. Susan writes as if she is talking to you, in a very personal and familiar way. Truly this book is an excellent read, while being ever so informative. I loved traveling with her!
It was fun, funny, and informative making it an easy read. It may have helped that the author is a personal friend and it felt like she was in the room telling the story. She is currently on a trip and I hope she does more writing.
Well written, fun, adventurous. Highly recommend. Susan's travels inspired me to add a few more to my own bucket list.
What a great read. This book rekindled my boomer urge to travel solo once again. Susan makes the case for experiences and destinations that are best done without the schedules and quirks of a bus load of other travelers. I haven't traveled to other countries on my own since I was in my 20's. This reminded me of the pleasures of setting one's own agenda and going at one's own pace. The great descriptions of UNESCO World Heritage sites are reason enough to pack my bags and begin a new adventure. The blog is loaded with practical travel ideas.
Anyone who has ever planned or thought about planning a trip on their own from scratch, especially to destinations less travelled will love this book. It takes a lot of work to plan a trip especially on a budget! Many people get daunted thinking about it and never really go on those adventures they have always dreamed of doing. Susan Thomas' book "Peanut-Buttered-Roast-Squid A Boomer Travels Solo" shows that it can be done - and done with style!
Susan Thomas does an amazing job blending not only descriptions of the sights, foods, travel planning details, language barriers, etc. but also adds the bonus of describing her adventures and the people she has met along the way. Susan Thomas spends just enough time balancing both throughout the book making you want to read the next chapter about the next destination on her travels as soon as you are done with the one you are on.
Susan Thomas exhibits an exceptional writing talent bringing her travel adventures to life. Her passion for travel, her interest in not only the sights, but the people, the art, the culture is so well done. This book is a must read.
I am already looking forward to Volume II. And I'm looking forward to planning my own trip probably to the same places that Susan Thomas has gone!
Susan Merrill Thomas is living this Boomer's
dream! By the "middle years" who hasn't faced some major crisis or upheaval? Rather than wallowing in self pity, Susan shows us all how to embrace life, face our fears, and live our dreams.
I was drawn in from the beginning, laughing at the details of her freedom party!
I cheered her on as she accepted the flight schedule limitations on her first trip.
She described the beauty of each place she visited, as well as all her her foibles and successes, that it was easy to imagine that you were traveling with her. I can still cringe over "swooping bats" in the bat cave!
Susan's writing style is captivating; she brings the adventures on "The Road Less Traveled" to life.
This book is a must read for anyone who is planning to travel solo, and for anyone who loves to dream
